This two-week online winter course will look at legal, political and human ramifications of displacement around the world. In our online international classroom, we will discuss these global governance issues from diverse perspectives such as (humanitarian) crisis management, geopolitics, international refugee law, and anthropology. The course will enable participants to understand the context in which forced migration takes place, the social change this triggers in hosting communities and the efforts needed to successfully integrate newcomers.

Target group

This is a graduate level online course that brings together students and professionals interested in the study of Migration from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. Course aim

Thise course will explore the journey of refugees on a macro scale by unpacking the various factors involved in forced migration. We will focus on global politics, get an introduction in international refugee law and learn more about the link between development and migration. We will look specifically into various displacement situations across the world (for example: the Syrian refugee crisis, the genocide on the Rohingya and their flight to Bangladesh, the migration crisis in Latin America, the influx of refugees into Europe and the political crisis this led to, the protracted refugee situation in the African Great Lakes region). We will also dive deeper into the topic of integration of refugees and grass-roots initiatives.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students who wish to earn credits will receive an official transcript stating the courses taken, credits earned and grades obtained.

Fee info

EUR 850: Tuition fee includes all course readings and materials, access to the digital library at the UvA, welcome and wrap-up sessions, live and pre-recorded lectures, access to the digital learning environment, individual feedback from our instructors on all course assignments, and an official transcript or a certificate of participation.
