This course focuses on the theory and practice of international arbitration as a distinct field of the law and field of legal practice. The course covers as a consequence international commercial arbitration, investment treaty arbitration and inter-State arbitration. Besides offering a general course on the principles and practice of international arbitration, the programme will also contain several thematic courses focusing on certain aspects of international arbitration, such as recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards and institutional arbitration, as well as area-specific courses such as the arbitration of disputes in the financial sector or in the area of intellectual property rights.

Target group

The course is targeted towards practitioners who seek to enlarge their vision or discover a new field of practice and scholars seeking to gain expertise in the application of concepts and norms within the field of international arbitration. Prior knowledge of, or experience in arbitration is desirable.

To provide students with the knowledge and expertise in the application of concepts and norms within the field of international arbitration.

Credits info

The participants will receive a certificate of participation after completion of the programme. Furthermore, we can issue a statement regarding the amount of ECTS credits we would assign to this course, based on the number of hours in class, preparation time and assignments, keeping in mind that 1 ECTS equals 28 hours of study. Your university can then evaluate this course and decide whether they will indeed award ECTS credits.

Fee info

EUR 900: The fee includes access to the digital learning environment of Leiden University (Blackboard), course materials (including the textbook on International Arbitration by Redfern and Hunter), a certificate of participation, a guided tour of the Peace Palace, lunches and refreshments on class days, a welcome reception, a course dinner and farewell drinks.
EUR 750: We offer a special Early Bird fee of €750 to the participants who register before 1 May 2017. Leiden University students, students from partner universities, and participants who have registered for another Grotius Centre summer school also pay a reduced fee of €750.
