Arts and Cultural Management
This course gives an introduction to management in the cultural field. You study theories and practices that demonstrate the value of management for the arts. The life of established arts organisations depends on the right strategic financial and organisational decisions. Also, independent artists need entrepreneurial skills to keep their businesses running. Managing the arts asks for insight in the typical characteristics of cultural and creative organisations, in creative processes and in dealing with risks.
In this course you get a thorough introduction in arts management theory. You will study the phases of the cultural value profit chain (creation, production, distribution, consumption) and get an introduction to management theory (finances, organisation, marketing, acquisition, project management, strategy, leadership and communication). We use Utrecht cultural city with its rich cultural life as a playground: You will get insight in the city’s cultural industry, from established city museums and theatres to small urban hip-hop initiatives and design companies. Arts managers and creative professionals will present case studies from their daily practice.
Students with a warm interest in the arts and an affinity for management in the cultural field. Students in humanities; art students. Management students who want to discover a new dimension of their profession in the cultural field.
After this course students have a global insight in basic theories in arts management theory and practice and in cultural entrepreneurship.
