The annual SSPSSR UG Summer School in Urban Ethnography provides participants with direct experience of urban ethnography and equips them with skills for future research. The Summer School exposes students to the principles and practices of ethnography in the study of people, place, practices and things in the urban setting of Paris and involves doing ethnography in the city and of the city.

The specific themes of the 2018 Summer School are:

Exploring rhythm in city life
Cultural and religious difference
Multisensory ethnography in contested spaces: segregation and sex work

Target group

Undergraduate students

Course aim

Understand the principles and ethical implications of the design and conduct of ethnographic research
Undertake effective observation with an awareness of different practices of looking
Appreciate the value of using multi-sensory research tools in different urban settings
Demonstrate capacity to interpret specific urban practices in everyday life
Apply relevant concepts and theories to practical observations of social, cultural, economic, affective and material life in the city
Understand the city as a site for the development of sociological, criminological, cultural and urban theory

Fee info

GBP 970: £970 for the one week course including teaching and materials, travel in Paris, accommodation (B&B), a welcome dinner, a mid-week buffet and a farewell dinner.

Scholarships

We have £500 Internationalisation Scholarships available for the the Urban Ethnography Summer Schools available to students not currently studying at the University of Kent. The deadline for applications with scholarships is 30 March 2018.
